Mr Evan Davies BM, FRCS Ed (Tr & Orth)

Evan Davies is a Fellowship trained spinal surgeon. His practice covers all areas and ages of the spine from neonates to the elder spine. All areas of spinal pathology are cared for from cervical spine, low back pain, nerve pain, and spinal deformity such as scoliosis, spinal tumours, infections and fractures. He cares for many local patients but also has regional, national and international patients. Spinal deformity is his major research interest and he has developed a national referral pattern for complex adult, paediatric and revision spinal deformity surgery. Locally he has pioneered the use of cement augmentation in spinal osteoporosis and myeloma patients.

Evan Davies is originally from the West Country but graduated from Southampton University in 1990. His basic surgical training occurred in Wessex and Exeter. He was the specialist registrar representative on the Wessex orthopaedic training programme. He under took specialist spinal fellowships in Zurich, Switzerland, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford and the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio USA. He commenced his consultant post in Southampton University Hospitals in 2003.

Since staring in Southampton he has been a specialist advisor to NICE on kyphoplasty and lateral interbody fusion. He constructed the orthopaedic teaching programme for Wessex trainees. In the medical school he acts as medical student mentor and 4th year medical student supervisor. He is currently the Royal College of Surgeons Surgical Tutor for Southampton. He sits on the Orthopaedic Surgical Advisory Committee for Wessex.

Since 2003 he has been active both locally, nationally and international in AOSpine, the world’s largest academic spinal society. In 2008 he became the first UK surgeon to be democratically elected to the European Board of AOSpine. This post involves orchestrating the educational and community needs of over a thousand spinal surgeons spanning Europe and Africa.

Mr Davies has chaired courses for junior doctors, nurses and surgeons both nationally and internationally and run worldwide master classes on spinal surgery. He has organised the first AOSpine course in the Baltic States and is currently developing members to the organisation throughout Eastern Europe and Africa. He is currently on the executive of the British Scoliosis Society.

Mr Davies’s philosophy for patients with spinal pain is that explanation and reassurance is the care that the vast majority of patients require. His aim is to provide the options and explanation that allows the individual to make the right choice for them.

Married with two young boys, Evan manages a local youth rugby team and enjoys cycling and travel. Rugby has always been a huge importance to his life and now as a rugby supporter of Bath and England, his playing days are behind him but he frequently reminisces on past scrum performances.
