Mr Jeremy Latham MA MCh FRCS (Orth)

A Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with a special interest in hip surgery, Jeremy was appointed to Southampton University Hospital NHS Trust in 1998. He did his medical training at Oxford and trained in orthopaedic surgery at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, The Royal Adelaide Hospital and The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham.

At the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital he trained in the technique of Birmingham hip resurfacing, which he introduced into the Wessex region. Because every hip is unique, he uses a variety of implants, both cemented and uncemented depending on the underlying problem and technical requirements. He is also experienced in less invasive surgical techniques.

Jeremy is a Fellow of the British Orthopaedic Association and a member of the British Hip Society. In the last few years he has travelled to India, Australia and Japan instructing surgeons on hip surgery, and is part of an international design group that is developing a ceramic hip resurfacing.

He specialises in primary and revision hip replacement surgery, and hip resurfacing. His particular interests are: hip replacement and hip resurfacing for younger patients; hip replacement for complex problems such as dysplasia and Perthes’ disease; and revision hip surgery, including the assessment and treatment of painful metal-on-metal hips.

Every year he does nearly 300 major hip surgery procedures, including about 50 revisions. He audits the results of his operations and conducts research projects on the outcome of hip resurfacing, and the use of large bearings in hip replacement surgery.
